وَإِذَامَسَّٱلۡإِنسَٰنَٱلضُّرُّدَعَانَالِجَنۢبِهِۦٓأَوۡقَاعِدًاأَوۡقَآئِمٗافَلَمَّاكَشَفۡنَاعَنۡهُضُرَّهُۥمَرَّكَأَنلَّمۡيَدۡعُنَآإِلَىٰضُرّٖمَّسَّهُۥۚكَذَٰلِكَزُيِّنَلِلۡمُسۡرِفِينَمَاكَانُواْيَعۡمَلُونَ١٢
Saheeh International

And when affliction touches man, he calls upon Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove from him his affliction, he continues [in disobedience] as if he had never called upon Us to [remove] an affliction that touched him. Thus is made pleasing to the transgressors that which they have been doing.

وَإِذَاWaitha
مَسَّmassa
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
ٱلضُّرُّalddurru
دَعَانَاdaAAana
لِجَنۢبِهِۦٓlijanbihi
أَوْaw
قَاعِدًاqaAAidan
أَوْaw
قَآئِمًۭاqaiman
فَلَمَّاfalamma
كَشَفْنَاkashafna
عَنْهُAAanhu
ضُرَّهُۥdurrahu
مَرَّmarra
كَأَنkaan
لَّمْlam
يَدْعُنَآyadAAuna
إِلَىٰila
ضُرٍّۢdurrin
مَّسَّهُۥ ۚmassahu
كَذَٰلِكَkathalika
زُيِّنَzuyyina
لِلْمُسْرِفِينَlilmusrifeena
مَاma
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَعْمَلُونَyaAAmaloona
وَلَئِنۡأَذَقۡنَٰهُنَعۡمَآءَبَعۡدَضَرَّآءَمَسَّتۡهُلَيَقُولَنَّذَهَبَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتُعَنِّيٓۚإِنَّهُۥلَفَرِحٞفَخُورٌ١٠
Saheeh International

But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "Bad times have left me." Indeed, he is exultant and boastful -

وَلَئِنْWalain
أَذَقْنَـٰهُathaqnahu
نَعْمَآءَnaAAmaa
بَعْدَbaAAda
ضَرَّآءَdarraa
مَسَّتْهُmassathu
لَيَقُولَنَّlayaqoolanna
ذَهَبَthahaba
ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتُalssayyiatu
عَنِّىٓ ۚAAannee
إِنَّهُۥinnahu
لَفَرِحٌۭlafarihun
فَخُورٌfakhoorun
وَلَئِنۡأَذَقۡنَاٱلۡإِنسَٰنَمِنَّارَحۡمَةٗثُمَّنَزَعۡنَٰهَامِنۡهُإِنَّهُۥلَيَـُٔوسٞكَفُورٞ٩
Saheeh International

And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is despairing and ungrateful.

وَلَئِنْWalain
أَذَقْنَاathaqna
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
مِنَّاminna
رَحْمَةًۭrahmatan
ثُمَّthumma
نَزَعْنَـٰهَاnazaAAnaha
مِنْهُminhu
إِنَّهُۥinnahu
لَيَـُٔوسٌۭlayaoosun
كَفُورٌۭkafoorun
وَمَابِكُممِّننِّعۡمَةٖفَمِنَٱللَّهِۖثُمَّإِذَامَسَّكُمُٱلضُّرُّفَإِلَيۡهِتَجۡـَٔرُونَ٥٣
Saheeh International

And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allāh. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.

وَمَاWama
بِكُمbikum
مِّنmin
نِّعْمَةٍۢniAAmatin
فَمِنَfamina
ٱللَّهِ ۖAllahi
ثُمَّthumma
إِذَاitha
مَسَّكُمُmassakumu
ٱلضُّرُّalddurru
فَإِلَيْهِfailayhi
تَجْـَٔرُونَtajaroona
ثُمَّإِذَاكَشَفَٱلضُّرَّعَنكُمۡإِذَافَرِيقٞمِّنكُمبِرَبِّهِمۡيُشۡرِكُونَ٥٤
Saheeh International

Then when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord

ثُمَّThumma
إِذَاitha
كَشَفَkashafa
ٱلضُّرَّalddurra
عَنكُمْAAankum
إِذَاitha
فَرِيقٌۭfareequn
مِّنكُمminkum
بِرَبِّهِمْbirabbihim
يُشْرِكُونَyushrikoona
لِيَكۡفُرُواْبِمَآءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمۡۚفَتَمَتَّعُواْفَسَوۡفَتَعۡلَمُونَ٥٥
Saheeh International

So they will deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.

لِيَكْفُرُوا۟Liyakfuroo
بِمَآbima
ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ۚataynahum
فَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ ۖfatamattaAAoo
فَسَوْفَfasawfa
تَعْلَمُونَtaAAlamoona
وَإِذَامَسَّكُمُٱلضُّرُّفِيٱلۡبَحۡرِضَلَّمَنتَدۡعُونَإِلَّآإِيَّاهُۖفَلَمَّانَجَّىٰكُمۡإِلَىٱلۡبَرِّأَعۡرَضۡتُمۡۚوَكَانَٱلۡإِنسَٰنُكَفُورًا٦٧
Saheeh International

And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.

وَإِذَاWaitha
مَسَّكُمُmassakumu
ٱلضُّرُّalddurru
فِىfee
ٱلْبَحْرِalbahri
ضَلَّdalla
مَنman
تَدْعُونَtadAAoona
إِلَّآilla
إِيَّاهُ ۖiyyahu
فَلَمَّاfalamma
نَجَّىٰكُمْnajjakum
إِلَىila
ٱلْبَرِّalbarri
أَعْرَضْتُمْ ۚaAAradtum
وَكَانَwakana
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُalinsanu
كَفُورًاkafooran
وَمِنَٱلنَّاسِمَنيَقُولُءَامَنَّابِٱللَّهِفَإِذَآأُوذِيَفِيٱللَّهِجَعَلَفِتۡنَةَٱلنَّاسِكَعَذَابِٱللَّهِۖوَلَئِنجَآءَنَصۡرٞمِّنرَّبِّكَلَيَقُولُنَّإِنَّاكُنَّامَعَكُمۡۚأَوَلَيۡسَٱللَّهُبِأَعۡلَمَبِمَافِيصُدُورِٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ١٠
Saheeh International

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh," but when one [of them] is harmed for [the cause of] Allāh, he considers the trial [i.e., harm] of the people as [if it were] the punishment of Allāh. But if victory comes from your Lord, they say, "Indeed, We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is within the breasts of the worlds [i.e., all creatures]?

وَمِنَWamina
ٱلنَّاسِalnnasi
مَنman
يَقُولُyaqoolu
ءَامَنَّاamanna
بِٱللَّهِbiAllahi
فَإِذَآfaitha
أُوذِىَoothiya
فِىfee
ٱللَّهِAllahi
جَعَلَjaAAala
فِتْنَةَfitnata
ٱلنَّاسِalnnasi
كَعَذَابِkaAAathabi
ٱللَّهِAllahi
وَلَئِنwalain
جَآءَjaa
نَصْرٌۭnasrun
مِّنmin
رَّبِّكَrabbika
لَيَقُولُنَّlayaqoolunna
إِنَّاinna
كُنَّاkunna
مَعَكُمْ ۚmaAAakum
أَوَلَيْسَawalaysa
ٱللَّهُAllahu
بِأَعْلَمَbiaAAlama
بِمَاbima
فِىfee
صُدُورِsudoori
ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَalAAalameena
وَإِذَامَسَّٱلنَّاسَضُرّٞدَعَوۡاْرَبَّهُممُّنِيبِينَإِلَيۡهِثُمَّإِذَآأَذَاقَهُممِّنۡهُرَحۡمَةًإِذَافَرِيقٞمِّنۡهُمبِرَبِّهِمۡيُشۡرِكُونَ٣٣
Saheeh International

And when adversity touches the people, they call upon their Lord, turning in repentance to Him. Then when He lets them taste mercy from Him, at once a party of them associate others with their Lord,

وَإِذَاWaitha
مَسَّmassa
ٱلنَّاسَalnnasa
ضُرٌّۭdurrun
دَعَوْا۟daAAaw
رَبَّهُمrabbahum
مُّنِيبِينَmuneebeena
إِلَيْهِilayhi
ثُمَّthumma
إِذَآitha
أَذَاقَهُمathaqahum
مِّنْهُminhu
رَحْمَةًrahmatan
إِذَاitha
فَرِيقٌۭfareequn
مِّنْهُمminhum
بِرَبِّهِمْbirabbihim
يُشْرِكُونَyushrikoona
وَإِذَاغَشِيَهُممَّوۡجٞكَٱلظُّلَلِدَعَوُاْٱللَّهَمُخۡلِصِينَلَهُٱلدِّينَفَلَمَّانَجَّىٰهُمۡإِلَىٱلۡبَرِّفَمِنۡهُممُّقۡتَصِدٞۚوَمَايَجۡحَدُبِـَٔايَٰتِنَآإِلَّاكُلُّخَتَّارٖكَفُورٖ٣٢
Saheeh International

And when waves come over them like canopies, they supplicate Allāh, sincere to Him in religion [i.e., faith]. But when He delivers them to the land, there are [some] of them who are moderate [in faith]. And none rejects Our signs except everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

وَإِذَاWaitha
غَشِيَهُمghashiyahum
مَّوْجٌۭmawjun
كَٱلظُّلَلِkaalththulali
دَعَوُا۟daAAawoo
ٱللَّهَAllaha
مُخْلِصِينَmukhliseena
لَهُlahu
ٱلدِّينَalddeena
فَلَمَّاfalamma
نَجَّىٰهُمْnajjahum
إِلَىila
ٱلْبَرِّalbarri
فَمِنْهُمfaminhum
مُّقْتَصِدٌۭ ۚmuqtasidun
وَمَاwama
يَجْحَدُyajhadu
بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآbiayatina
إِلَّاilla
كُلُّkullu
خَتَّارٍۢkhattarin
كَفُورٍۢkafoorin
فَإِذَامَسَّٱلۡإِنسَٰنَضُرّٞدَعَانَاثُمَّإِذَاخَوَّلۡنَٰهُنِعۡمَةٗمِّنَّاقَالَإِنَّمَآأُوتِيتُهُۥعَلَىٰعِلۡمِۭۚبَلۡهِيَفِتۡنَةٞوَلَٰكِنَّأَكۡثَرَهُمۡلَايَعۡلَمُونَ٤٩
Saheeh International

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.

فَإِذَاFaitha
مَسَّmassa
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
ضُرٌّۭdurrun
دَعَانَاdaAAana
ثُمَّthumma
إِذَاitha
خَوَّلْنَـٰهُkhawwalnahu
نِعْمَةًۭniAAmatan
مِّنَّاminna
قَالَqala
إِنَّمَآinnama
أُوتِيتُهُۥooteetuhu
عَلَىٰAAala
عِلْمٍۭ ۚAAilmin
بَلْbal
هِىَhiya
فِتْنَةٌۭfitnatun
وَلَـٰكِنَّwalakinna
أَكْثَرَهُمْaktharahum
لَاla
يَعْلَمُونَyaAAlamoona
۞ وَإِذَامَسَّٱلۡإِنسَٰنَضُرّٞدَعَارَبَّهُۥمُنِيبًاإِلَيۡهِثُمَّإِذَاخَوَّلَهُۥنِعۡمَةٗمِّنۡهُنَسِيَمَاكَانَيَدۡعُوٓاْإِلَيۡهِمِنقَبۡلُوَجَعَلَلِلَّهِأَندَادٗالِّيُضِلَّعَنسَبِيلِهِۦۚقُلۡتَمَتَّعۡبِكُفۡرِكَقَلِيلًاإِنَّكَمِنۡأَصۡحَٰبِٱلنَّارِ٨
Saheeh International

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him [alone]; then when He bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before,1 and he attributes to Allāh equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire."

۞ وَإِذَاWaitha
مَسَّmassa
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
ضُرٌّۭdurrun
دَعَاdaAAa
رَبَّهُۥrabbahu
مُنِيبًاmuneeban
إِلَيْهِilayhi
ثُمَّthumma
إِذَاitha
خَوَّلَهُۥkhawwalahu
نِعْمَةًۭniAAmatan
مِّنْهُminhu
نَسِىَnasiya
مَاma
كَانَkana
يَدْعُوٓا۟yadAAoo
إِلَيْهِilayhi
مِنmin
قَبْلُqablu
وَجَعَلَwajaAAala
لِلَّهِlillahi
أَندَادًۭاandadan
لِّيُضِلَّliyudilla
عَنAAan
سَبِيلِهِۦ ۚsabeelihi
قُلْqul
تَمَتَّعْtamattaAA
بِكُفْرِكَbikufrika
قَلِيلًا ۖqaleelan
إِنَّكَinnaka
مِنْmin
أَصْحَـٰبِashabi
ٱلنَّارِalnnari
لَّايَسۡـَٔمُٱلۡإِنسَٰنُمِندُعَآءِٱلۡخَيۡرِوَإِنمَّسَّهُٱلشَّرُّفَيَـُٔوسٞقَنُوطٞ٤٩
Saheeh International

Man is not weary of supplication for good [things], but if evil touches him, he is hopeless and despairing.

لَّاLa
يَسْـَٔمُyasamu
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُalinsanu
مِنmin
دُعَآءِduAAai
ٱلْخَيْرِalkhayri
وَإِنwain
مَّسَّهُmassahu
ٱلشَّرُّalshsharru
فَيَـُٔوسٌۭfayaoosun
قَنُوطٌۭqanootun
وَلَئِنۡأَذَقۡنَٰهُرَحۡمَةٗمِّنَّامِنۢبَعۡدِضَرَّآءَمَسَّتۡهُلَيَقُولَنَّهَٰذَالِيوَمَآأَظُنُّٱلسَّاعَةَقَآئِمَةٗوَلَئِنرُّجِعۡتُإِلَىٰرَبِّيٓإِنَّلِيعِندَهُۥلَلۡحُسۡنَىٰۚفَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّٱلَّذِينَكَفَرُواْبِمَاعَمِلُواْوَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُممِّنۡعَذَابٍغَلِيظٖ٥٠
Saheeh International

And if We let him taste mercy from Us after an adversity which has touched him, he will surely say, "This is [due] to me,1 and I do not think the Hour will occur; and [even] if I should be returned to my Lord, indeed, for me there will be with Him the best." But We will surely inform those who disbelieved about what they did, and We will surely make them taste a massive punishment.

وَلَئِنْWalain
أَذَقْنَـٰهُathaqnahu
رَحْمَةًۭrahmatan
مِّنَّاminna
مِنۢmin
بَعْدِbaAAdi
ضَرَّآءَdarraa
مَسَّتْهُmassathu
لَيَقُولَنَّlayaqoolanna
هَـٰذَاhatha
لِىlee
وَمَآwama
أَظُنُّathunnu
ٱلسَّاعَةَalssaAAata
قَآئِمَةًۭqaimatan
وَلَئِنwalain
رُّجِعْتُrujiAAtu
إِلَىٰila
رَبِّىٓrabbee
إِنَّinna
لِىlee
عِندَهُۥAAindahu
لَلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚlalhusna
فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّfalanunabbianna
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
كَفَرُوا۟kafaroo
بِمَاbima
عَمِلُوا۟AAamiloo
وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُمwalanutheeqannahum
مِّنْmin
عَذَابٍAAathabin
غَلِيظٍۢghaleethin
وَإِذَآأَنۡعَمۡنَاعَلَىٱلۡإِنسَٰنِأَعۡرَضَوَنَـَٔابِجَانِبِهِۦوَإِذَامَسَّهُٱلشَّرُّفَذُودُعَآءٍعَرِيضٖ٥١
Saheeh International

And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication.

وَإِذَآWaitha
أَنْعَمْنَاanAAamna
عَلَىAAala
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِalinsani
أَعْرَضَaAArada
وَنَـَٔاwanaa
بِجَانِبِهِۦbijanibihi
وَإِذَاwaitha
مَسَّهُmassahu
ٱلشَّرُّalshsharru
فَذُوfathoo
دُعَآءٍduAAain
عَرِيضٍۢAAareedin
فَإِنۡأَعۡرَضُواْفَمَآأَرۡسَلۡنَٰكَعَلَيۡهِمۡحَفِيظًاۖإِنۡعَلَيۡكَإِلَّاٱلۡبَلَٰغُۗوَإِنَّآإِذَآأَذَقۡنَاٱلۡإِنسَٰنَمِنَّارَحۡمَةٗفَرِحَبِهَاۖوَإِنتُصِبۡهُمۡسَيِّئَةُۢبِمَاقَدَّمَتۡأَيۡدِيهِمۡفَإِنَّٱلۡإِنسَٰنَكَفُورٞ٤٨
Saheeh International

But if they turn away - then We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], over them as a guardian; upon you is only [the duty of] notification. And indeed, when We let man taste mercy from Us, he rejoices in it; but if evil afflicts him for what his hands have put forth, then indeed, man is ungrateful.

فَإِنْFain
أَعْرَضُوا۟aAAradoo
فَمَآfama
أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَarsalnaka
عَلَيْهِمْAAalayhim
حَفِيظًا ۖhafeethan
إِنْin
عَلَيْكَAAalayka
إِلَّاilla
ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ۗalbalaghu
وَإِنَّآwainna
إِذَآitha
أَذَقْنَاathaqna
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
مِنَّاminna
رَحْمَةًۭrahmatan
فَرِحَfariha
بِهَا ۖbiha
وَإِنwain
تُصِبْهُمْtusibhum
سَيِّئَةٌۢsayyiatun
بِمَاbima
قَدَّمَتْqaddamat
أَيْدِيهِمْaydeehim
فَإِنَّfainna
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
كَفُورٌۭkafoorun
۞ إِنَّٱلۡإِنسَٰنَخُلِقَهَلُوعًا١٩
Saheeh International

Indeed, mankind was created anxious:

۞ إِنَّInna
ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَalinsana
خُلِقَkhuliqa
هَلُوعًاhalooAAan
إِذَامَسَّهُٱلشَّرُّجَزُوعٗا٢٠
Saheeh International

When evil touches him, impatient,

إِذَاItha
مَسَّهُmassahu
ٱلشَّرُّalshsharru
جَزُوعًۭاjazooAAan
وَإِذَامَسَّهُٱلۡخَيۡرُمَنُوعًا٢١
Saheeh International

And when good touches him, withholding [of it],

وَإِذَاWaitha
مَسَّهُmassahu
ٱلْخَيْرُalkhayru
مَنُوعًاmanooAAan
وَأَمَّآإِذَامَاٱبۡتَلَىٰهُفَقَدَرَعَلَيۡهِرِزۡقَهُۥفَيَقُولُرَبِّيٓأَهَٰنَنِ١٦
Saheeh International

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

وَأَمَّآWaamma
إِذَاitha
مَاma
ٱبْتَلَىٰهُibtalahu
فَقَدَرَfaqadara
عَلَيْهِAAalayhi
رِزْقَهُۥrizqahu
فَيَقُولُfayaqoolu
رَبِّىٓrabbee
أَهَـٰنَنِahanani
