وَإِذۡقِيلَلَهُمُٱسۡكُنُواْهَٰذِهِٱلۡقَرۡيَةَوَكُلُواْمِنۡهَاحَيۡثُشِئۡتُمۡوَقُولُواْحِطَّةٞوَٱدۡخُلُواْٱلۡبَابَسُجَّدٗانَّغۡفِرۡلَكُمۡخَطِيٓـَٰٔتِكُمۡۚسَنَزِيدُٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ١٦١
Saheeh International

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when it was said to them, "Dwell in this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins],' and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."

وَإِذْWaith
قِيلَqeela
لَهُمُlahumu
ٱسْكُنُوا۟oskunoo
هَـٰذِهِhathihi
ٱلْقَرْيَةَalqaryata
وَكُلُوا۟wakuloo
مِنْهَاminha
حَيْثُhaythu
شِئْتُمْshitum
وَقُولُوا۟waqooloo
حِطَّةٌۭhittatun
وَٱدْخُلُوا۟waodkhuloo
ٱلْبَابَalbaba
سُجَّدًۭاsujjadan
نَّغْفِرْnaghfir
لَكُمْlakum
خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِكُمْ ۚkhateeatikum
سَنَزِيدُsanazeedu
ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَalmuhsineena
فَبَدَّلَٱلَّذِينَظَلَمُواْمِنۡهُمۡقَوۡلًاغَيۡرَٱلَّذِيقِيلَلَهُمۡفَأَرۡسَلۡنَاعَلَيۡهِمۡرِجۡزٗامِّنَٱلسَّمَآءِبِمَاكَانُواْيَظۡلِمُونَ١٦٢
Saheeh International

But those who wronged among them changed [the words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them. So We sent upon them a punishment from the sky for the wrong that they were doing.

فَبَدَّلَFabaddala
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
ظَلَمُوا۟thalamoo
مِنْهُمْminhum
قَوْلًاqawlan
غَيْرَghayra
ٱلَّذِىallathee
قِيلَqeela
لَهُمْlahum
فَأَرْسَلْنَاfaarsalna
عَلَيْهِمْAAalayhim
رِجْزًۭاrijzan
مِّنَmina
ٱلسَّمَآءِalssamai
بِمَاbima
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَظْلِمُونَyathlimoona
وَسۡـَٔلۡهُمۡعَنِٱلۡقَرۡيَةِٱلَّتِيكَانَتۡحَاضِرَةَٱلۡبَحۡرِإِذۡيَعۡدُونَفِيٱلسَّبۡتِإِذۡتَأۡتِيهِمۡحِيتَانُهُمۡيَوۡمَسَبۡتِهِمۡشُرَّعٗاوَيَوۡمَلَايَسۡبِتُونَلَاتَأۡتِيهِمۡۚكَذَٰلِكَنَبۡلُوهُمبِمَاكَانُواْيَفۡسُقُونَ١٦٣
Saheeh International

And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.

وَسْـَٔلْهُمْWaisalhum
عَنِAAani
ٱلْقَرْيَةِalqaryati
ٱلَّتِىallatee
كَانَتْkanat
حَاضِرَةَhadirata
ٱلْبَحْرِalbahri
إِذْith
يَعْدُونَyaAAdoona
فِىfee
ٱلسَّبْتِalssabti
إِذْith
تَأْتِيهِمْtateehim
حِيتَانُهُمْheetanuhum
يَوْمَyawma
سَبْتِهِمْsabtihim
شُرَّعًۭاshurraAAan
وَيَوْمَwayawma
لَاla
يَسْبِتُونَ ۙyasbitoona
لَاla
تَأْتِيهِمْ ۚtateehim
كَذَٰلِكَkathalika
نَبْلُوهُمnabloohum
بِمَاbima
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَفْسُقُونَyafsuqoona
وَإِذۡقَالَتۡأُمَّةٞمِّنۡهُمۡلِمَتَعِظُونَقَوۡمًاٱللَّهُمُهۡلِكُهُمۡأَوۡمُعَذِّبُهُمۡعَذَابٗاشَدِيدٗاۖقَالُواْمَعۡذِرَةًإِلَىٰرَبِّكُمۡوَلَعَلَّهُمۡيَتَّقُونَ١٦٤
Saheeh International

And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allāh is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."

وَإِذْWaith
قَالَتْqalat
أُمَّةٌۭommatun
مِّنْهُمْminhum
لِمَlima
تَعِظُونَtaAAithoona
قَوْمًا ۙqawman
ٱللَّهُAllahu
مُهْلِكُهُمْmuhlikuhum
أَوْaw
مُعَذِّبُهُمْmuAAaththibuhum
عَذَابًۭاAAathaban
شَدِيدًۭا ۖshadeedan
قَالُوا۟qaloo
مَعْذِرَةًmaAAthiratan
إِلَىٰila
رَبِّكُمْrabbikum
وَلَعَلَّهُمْwalaAAallahum
يَتَّقُونَyattaqoona
فَلَمَّانَسُواْمَاذُكِّرُواْبِهِۦٓأَنجَيۡنَاٱلَّذِينَيَنۡهَوۡنَعَنِٱلسُّوٓءِوَأَخَذۡنَاٱلَّذِينَظَلَمُواْبِعَذَابِۭبَـِٔيسِۭبِمَاكَانُواْيَفۡسُقُونَ١٦٥
Saheeh International

And when they [i.e., those advised] forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.

فَلَمَّاFalamma
نَسُوا۟nasoo
مَاma
ذُكِّرُوا۟thukkiroo
بِهِۦٓbihi
أَنجَيْنَاanjayna
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
يَنْهَوْنَyanhawna
عَنِAAani
ٱلسُّوٓءِalssooi
وَأَخَذْنَاwaakhathna
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
ظَلَمُوا۟thalamoo
بِعَذَابٍۭbiAAathabin
بَـِٔيسٍۭbaeesin
بِمَاbima
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَفْسُقُونَyafsuqoona
فَلَمَّاعَتَوۡاْعَنمَّانُهُواْعَنۡهُقُلۡنَالَهُمۡكُونُواْقِرَدَةًخَٰسِـِٔينَ١٦٦
Saheeh International

So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."

فَلَمَّاFalamma
عَتَوْا۟AAataw
عَنAAan
مَّاma
نُهُوا۟nuhoo
عَنْهُAAanhu
قُلْنَاqulna
لَهُمْlahum
كُونُوا۟koonoo
قِرَدَةًqiradatan
خَـٰسِـِٔينَkhasieena
وَإِذۡتَأَذَّنَرَبُّكَلَيَبۡعَثَنَّعَلَيۡهِمۡإِلَىٰيَوۡمِٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِمَنيَسُومُهُمۡسُوٓءَٱلۡعَذَابِۗإِنَّرَبَّكَلَسَرِيعُٱلۡعِقَابِوَإِنَّهُۥلَغَفُورٞرَّحِيمٞ١٦٧
Saheeh International

And [mention] when your Lord declared that He would surely [continue to] send upon them until the Day of Resurrection those who would afflict them with the worst torment. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

وَإِذْWaith
تَأَذَّنَtaaththana
رَبُّكَrabbuka
لَيَبْعَثَنَّlayabAAathanna
عَلَيْهِمْAAalayhim
إِلَىٰila
يَوْمِyawmi
ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِalqiyamati
مَنman
يَسُومُهُمْyasoomuhum
سُوٓءَsooa
ٱلْعَذَابِ ۗalAAathabi
إِنَّinna
رَبَّكَrabbaka
لَسَرِيعُlasareeAAu
ٱلْعِقَابِ ۖalAAiqabi
وَإِنَّهُۥwainnahu
لَغَفُورٌۭlaghafoorun
رَّحِيمٌۭraheemun
وَقَطَّعۡنَٰهُمۡفِيٱلۡأَرۡضِأُمَمٗاۖمِّنۡهُمُٱلصَّٰلِحُونَوَمِنۡهُمۡدُونَذَٰلِكَۖوَبَلَوۡنَٰهُمبِٱلۡحَسَنَٰتِوَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِلَعَلَّهُمۡيَرۡجِعُونَ١٦٨
Saheeh International

And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].

وَقَطَّعْنَـٰهُمْWaqattaAAnahum
فِىfee
ٱلْأَرْضِalardi
أُمَمًۭا ۖomaman
مِّنْهُمُminhumu
ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَalssalihoona
وَمِنْهُمْwaminhum
دُونَdoona
ذَٰلِكَ ۖthalika
وَبَلَوْنَـٰهُمwabalawnahum
بِٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِbialhasanati
وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِwaalssayyiati
لَعَلَّهُمْlaAAallahum
يَرْجِعُونَyarjiAAoona
فَخَلَفَمِنۢبَعۡدِهِمۡخَلۡفٞوَرِثُواْٱلۡكِتَٰبَيَأۡخُذُونَعَرَضَهَٰذَاٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰوَيَقُولُونَسَيُغۡفَرُلَنَاوَإِنيَأۡتِهِمۡعَرَضٞمِّثۡلُهُۥيَأۡخُذُوهُۚأَلَمۡيُؤۡخَذۡعَلَيۡهِممِّيثَٰقُٱلۡكِتَٰبِأَنلَّايَقُولُواْعَلَىٱللَّهِإِلَّاٱلۡحَقَّوَدَرَسُواْمَافِيهِۗوَٱلدَّارُٱلۡأٓخِرَةُخَيۡرٞلِّلَّذِينَيَتَّقُونَۚأَفَلَاتَعۡقِلُونَ١٦٩
Saheeh International

And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities1 of this lower life and saying, "It will be forgiven for us." And if an offer like it2 comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] taken from them that they would not say about Allāh except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allāh, so will you not use reason?

فَخَلَفَFakhalafa
مِنۢmin
بَعْدِهِمْbaAAdihim
خَلْفٌۭkhalfun
وَرِثُوا۟warithoo
ٱلْكِتَـٰبَalkitaba
يَأْخُذُونَyakhuthoona
عَرَضَAAarada
هَـٰذَاhatha
ٱلْأَدْنَىٰaladna
وَيَقُولُونَwayaqooloona
سَيُغْفَرُsayughfaru
لَنَاlana
وَإِنwain
يَأْتِهِمْyatihim
عَرَضٌۭAAaradun
مِّثْلُهُۥmithluhu
يَأْخُذُوهُ ۚyakhuthoohu
أَلَمْalam
يُؤْخَذْyukhath
عَلَيْهِمAAalayhim
مِّيثَـٰقُmeethaqu
ٱلْكِتَـٰبِalkitabi
أَنan
لَّاla
يَقُولُوا۟yaqooloo
عَلَىAAala
ٱللَّهِAllahi
إِلَّاilla
ٱلْحَقَّalhaqqa
وَدَرَسُوا۟wadarasoo
مَاma
فِيهِ ۗfeehi
وَٱلدَّارُwaalddaru
ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُalakhiratu
خَيْرٌۭkhayrun
لِّلَّذِينَlillatheena
يَتَّقُونَ ۗyattaqoona
أَفَلَاafala
تَعْقِلُونَtaAAqiloona
وَٱلَّذِينَيُمَسِّكُونَبِٱلۡكِتَٰبِوَأَقَامُواْٱلصَّلَوٰةَإِنَّالَانُضِيعُأَجۡرَٱلۡمُصۡلِحِينَ١٧٠
Saheeh International

But those who hold fast to the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and establish prayer - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of the reformers.

وَٱلَّذِينَWaallatheena
يُمَسِّكُونَyumassikoona
بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِbialkitabi
وَأَقَامُوا۟waaqamoo
ٱلصَّلَوٰةَalssalata
إِنَّاinna
لَاla
نُضِيعُnudeeAAu
أَجْرَajra
ٱلْمُصْلِحِينَalmusliheena
۞ وَإِذۡنَتَقۡنَاٱلۡجَبَلَفَوۡقَهُمۡكَأَنَّهُۥظُلَّةٞوَظَنُّوٓاْأَنَّهُۥوَاقِعُۢبِهِمۡخُذُواْمَآءَاتَيۡنَٰكُمبِقُوَّةٖوَٱذۡكُرُواْمَافِيهِلَعَلَّكُمۡتَتَّقُونَ١٧١
Saheeh International

And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them,1 [and Allāh said], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that you might fear Allāh."

۞ وَإِذْWaith
نَتَقْنَاnataqna
ٱلْجَبَلَaljabala
فَوْقَهُمْfawqahum
كَأَنَّهُۥkaannahu
ظُلَّةٌۭthullatun
وَظَنُّوٓا۟wathannoo
أَنَّهُۥannahu
وَاقِعٌۢwaqiAAun
بِهِمْbihim
خُذُوا۟khuthoo
مَآma
ءَاتَيْنَـٰكُمataynakum
بِقُوَّةٍۢbiquwwatin
وَٱذْكُرُوا۟waothkuroo
مَاma
فِيهِfeehi
لَعَلَّكُمْlaAAallakum
تَتَّقُونَtattaqoona
