وَسۡـَٔلۡهُمۡعَنِٱلۡقَرۡيَةِٱلَّتِيكَانَتۡحَاضِرَةَٱلۡبَحۡرِإِذۡيَعۡدُونَفِيٱلسَّبۡتِإِذۡتَأۡتِيهِمۡحِيتَانُهُمۡيَوۡمَسَبۡتِهِمۡشُرَّعٗاوَيَوۡمَلَايَسۡبِتُونَلَاتَأۡتِيهِمۡۚكَذَٰلِكَنَبۡلُوهُمبِمَاكَانُواْيَفۡسُقُونَ١٦٣
Saheeh International

And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.

وَسْـَٔلْهُمْWaisalhum
عَنِAAani
ٱلْقَرْيَةِalqaryati
ٱلَّتِىallatee
كَانَتْkanat
حَاضِرَةَhadirata
ٱلْبَحْرِalbahri
إِذْith
يَعْدُونَyaAAdoona
فِىfee
ٱلسَّبْتِalssabti
إِذْith
تَأْتِيهِمْtateehim
حِيتَانُهُمْheetanuhum
يَوْمَyawma
سَبْتِهِمْsabtihim
شُرَّعًۭاshurraAAan
وَيَوْمَwayawma
لَاla
يَسْبِتُونَ ۙyasbitoona
لَاla
تَأْتِيهِمْ ۚtateehim
كَذَٰلِكَkathalika
نَبْلُوهُمnabloohum
بِمَاbima
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَفْسُقُونَyafsuqoona
فَلَمَّابَلَغَامَجۡمَعَبَيۡنِهِمَانَسِيَاحُوتَهُمَافَٱتَّخَذَسَبِيلَهُۥفِيٱلۡبَحۡرِسَرَبٗا٦١
Saheeh International

But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot their fish, and it took its course into the sea, slipping away.

فَلَمَّاFalamma
بَلَغَاbalagha
مَجْمَعَmajmaAAa
بَيْنِهِمَاbaynihima
نَسِيَاnasiya
حُوتَهُمَاhootahuma
فَٱتَّخَذَfaittakhatha
سَبِيلَهُۥsabeelahu
فِىfee
ٱلْبَحْرِalbahri
سَرَبًۭاsaraban
قَالَأَرَءَيۡتَإِذۡأَوَيۡنَآإِلَىٱلصَّخۡرَةِفَإِنِّينَسِيتُٱلۡحُوتَوَمَآأَنسَىٰنِيهُإِلَّاٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُأَنۡأَذۡكُرَهُۥۚوَٱتَّخَذَسَبِيلَهُۥفِيٱلۡبَحۡرِعَجَبٗا٦٣
Saheeh International

He said, "Did you see when we retired to the rock? Indeed, I forgot [there] the fish. And none made me forget it except Satan - that I should mention it. And it took its course into the sea amazingly."

قَالَQala
أَرَءَيْتَaraayta
إِذْith
أَوَيْنَآawayna
إِلَىila
ٱلصَّخْرَةِalssakhrati
فَإِنِّىfainnee
نَسِيتُnaseetu
ٱلْحُوتَalhoota
وَمَآwama
أَنسَىٰنِيهُansaneehu
إِلَّاilla
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُalshshaytanu
أَنْan
أَذْكُرَهُۥ ۚathkurahu
وَٱتَّخَذَwaittakhatha
سَبِيلَهُۥsabeelahu
فِىfee
ٱلْبَحْرِalbahri
عَجَبًۭاAAajaban
37:142
Open Ayah
فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُٱلۡحُوتُوَهُوَمُلِيمٞ١٤٢
Saheeh International

Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.1

فَٱلْتَقَمَهُFailtaqamahu
ٱلْحُوتُalhootu
وَهُوَwahuwa
مُلِيمٌۭmuleemun
فَٱصۡبِرۡلِحُكۡمِرَبِّكَوَلَاتَكُنكَصَاحِبِٱلۡحُوتِإِذۡنَادَىٰوَهُوَمَكۡظُومٞ٤٨
Saheeh International

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.

فَٱصْبِرْFaisbir
لِحُكْمِlihukmi
رَبِّكَrabbika
وَلَاwala
تَكُنtakun
كَصَاحِبِkasahibi
ٱلْحُوتِalhooti
إِذْith
نَادَىٰnada
وَهُوَwahuwa
مَكْظُومٌۭmakthoomun
