Disease in the hearts of hypocrites and disbelievers

In their hearts is disease, so Allāh has increased their disease;¹ and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.

So you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] hastening into [association with] them, saying, "We are afraid a misfortune may strike us." But perhaps Allāh will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful.

[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease [i.e., arrogance and disbelief] said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has [only] increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil.¹ And they will have died while they are disbelievers.

[That is] so He may make what Satan throws in [i.e., asserts] a trial for those within whose hearts is disease¹ and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension.

Is there disease in their hearts? Or have they doubted? Or do they fear that Allāh will be unjust to them, or His Messenger? Rather, it is they who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].

And [remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, "Allāh and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion,"

O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allāh, then do not be soft in speech [to men],¹ lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.

If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease¹ and those who spread rumors in al-Madīnah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little,

Those who believe say, "Why has a sūrah¹ not been sent down?" But when a precise sūrah is revealed and battle is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them² [would have been]

Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allāh would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.
