Cover

And among them are those who listen to you,¹ but We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. Even when they come to you arguing with you, those who disbelieve say, "This is not but legends of the former peoples."

So when the night covered him [with darkness], he saw a star. He said, "This is my lord."¹ But when it set, he said, "I like not those that set [i.e., disappear]."

It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he¹ might dwell in security with her. And when he [i.e., man] covers her,² she carries a light burden [i.e., a pregnancy] and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allāh, their Lord, "If You should give us a good³ [child], we will surely be among the grateful."

O children of Adam, let not Satan tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their clothing¹ to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies to those who do not believe.

They will have from Hell a bed and over them coverings [of fire]. And thus do We recompense the wrongdoers.

And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord but turns away from them and forgets what his hands have put forth? Indeed, We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And if you invite them to guidance - they will never be guided, then - ever.

And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision¹ and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment² except that which [necessarily] appears thereof³ and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire,⁴ or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.

And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings [i.e., screened] from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work;¹ indeed, we are working."

[It will be said], "You were certainly in unmindfulness of this, and We have removed from you your cover,¹ so your sight, this Day, is sharp."

And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].

And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it¹

And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness,

He has succeeded who purifies it,
