وَلَقَدۡعَلِمۡتُمُٱلَّذِينَٱعۡتَدَوۡاْمِنكُمۡفِيٱلسَّبۡتِفَقُلۡنَالَهُمۡكُونُواْقِرَدَةًخَٰسِـِٔينَ٦٥
Saheeh International

And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised."

وَلَقَدْWalaqad
عَلِمْتُمُAAalimtumu
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
ٱعْتَدَوْا۟iAAtadaw
مِنكُمْminkum
فِىfee
ٱلسَّبْتِalssabti
فَقُلْنَاfaqulna
لَهُمْlahum
كُونُوا۟koonoo
قِرَدَةًqiradatan
خَـٰسِـِٔينَkhasieena
وَرَفَعۡنَافَوۡقَهُمُٱلطُّورَبِمِيثَٰقِهِمۡوَقُلۡنَالَهُمُٱدۡخُلُواْٱلۡبَابَسُجَّدٗاوَقُلۡنَالَهُمۡلَاتَعۡدُواْفِيٱلسَّبۡتِوَأَخَذۡنَامِنۡهُممِّيثَٰقًاغَلِيظٗا١٥٤
Saheeh International

And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, "Enter the gate bowing humbly"; and We said to them, "Do not transgress on the sabbath"; and We took from them a solemn covenant.

وَرَفَعْنَاWarafaAAna
فَوْقَهُمُfawqahumu
ٱلطُّورَalttoora
بِمِيثَـٰقِهِمْbimeethaqihim
وَقُلْنَاwaqulna
لَهُمُlahumu
ٱدْخُلُوا۟odkhuloo
ٱلْبَابَalbaba
سُجَّدًۭاsujjadan
وَقُلْنَاwaqulna
لَهُمْlahum
لَاla
تَعْدُوا۟taAAdoo
فِىfee
ٱلسَّبْتِalssabti
وَأَخَذْنَاwaakhathna
مِنْهُمminhum
مِّيثَـٰقًاmeethaqan
غَلِيظًۭاghaleethan
فَبِمَانَقۡضِهِممِّيثَٰقَهُمۡوَكُفۡرِهِمبِـَٔايَٰتِٱللَّهِوَقَتۡلِهِمُٱلۡأَنۢبِيَآءَبِغَيۡرِحَقّٖوَقَوۡلِهِمۡقُلُوبُنَاغُلۡفُۢۚبَلۡطَبَعَٱللَّهُعَلَيۡهَابِكُفۡرِهِمۡفَلَايُؤۡمِنُونَإِلَّاقَلِيلٗا١٥٥
Saheeh International

And [We cursed them]1 for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allāh and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped" [i.e., sealed against reception]. Rather, Allāh has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.2

فَبِمَاFabima
نَقْضِهِمnaqdihim
مِّيثَـٰقَهُمْmeethaqahum
وَكُفْرِهِمwakufrihim
بِـَٔايَـٰتِbiayati
ٱللَّهِAllahi
وَقَتْلِهِمُwaqatlihimu
ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَalanbiyaa
بِغَيْرِbighayri
حَقٍّۢhaqqin
وَقَوْلِهِمْwaqawlihim
قُلُوبُنَاquloobuna
غُلْفٌۢ ۚghulfun
بَلْbal
طَبَعَtabaAAa
ٱللَّهُAllahu
عَلَيْهَاAAalayha
بِكُفْرِهِمْbikufrihim
فَلَاfala
يُؤْمِنُونَyuminoona
إِلَّاilla
قَلِيلًۭاqaleelan
وَسۡـَٔلۡهُمۡعَنِٱلۡقَرۡيَةِٱلَّتِيكَانَتۡحَاضِرَةَٱلۡبَحۡرِإِذۡيَعۡدُونَفِيٱلسَّبۡتِإِذۡتَأۡتِيهِمۡحِيتَانُهُمۡيَوۡمَسَبۡتِهِمۡشُرَّعٗاوَيَوۡمَلَايَسۡبِتُونَلَاتَأۡتِيهِمۡۚكَذَٰلِكَنَبۡلُوهُمبِمَاكَانُواْيَفۡسُقُونَ١٦٣
Saheeh International

And ask them about the town that was by the sea - when they transgressed in [the matter of] the sabbath - when their fish came to them openly on their sabbath day, and the day they had no sabbath they did not come to them. Thus did We give them trial because they were defiantly disobedient.

وَسْـَٔلْهُمْWaisalhum
عَنِAAani
ٱلْقَرْيَةِalqaryati
ٱلَّتِىallatee
كَانَتْkanat
حَاضِرَةَhadirata
ٱلْبَحْرِalbahri
إِذْith
يَعْدُونَyaAAdoona
فِىfee
ٱلسَّبْتِalssabti
إِذْith
تَأْتِيهِمْtateehim
حِيتَانُهُمْheetanuhum
يَوْمَyawma
سَبْتِهِمْsabtihim
شُرَّعًۭاshurraAAan
وَيَوْمَwayawma
لَاla
يَسْبِتُونَ ۙyasbitoona
لَاla
تَأْتِيهِمْ ۚtateehim
كَذَٰلِكَkathalika
نَبْلُوهُمnabloohum
بِمَاbima
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَفْسُقُونَyafsuqoona
وَإِذۡقَالَتۡأُمَّةٞمِّنۡهُمۡلِمَتَعِظُونَقَوۡمًاٱللَّهُمُهۡلِكُهُمۡأَوۡمُعَذِّبُهُمۡعَذَابٗاشَدِيدٗاۖقَالُواْمَعۡذِرَةًإِلَىٰرَبِّكُمۡوَلَعَلَّهُمۡيَتَّقُونَ١٦٤
Saheeh International

And when a community among them said, "Why do you advise [or warn] a people whom Allāh is [about] to destroy or to punish with a severe punishment?" they [the advisors] said, "To be absolved before your Lord and perhaps they may fear Him."

وَإِذْWaith

أُمَّةٌۭommatun
مِّنْهُمْminhum
لِمَlima
تَعِظُونَtaAAithoona
قَوْمًا ۙqawman
ٱللَّهُAllahu
مُهْلِكُهُمْmuhlikuhum
أَوْaw
مُعَذِّبُهُمْmuAAaththibuhum
عَذَابًۭاAAathaban
شَدِيدًۭا ۖshadeedan
قَالُوا۟qaloo
مَعْذِرَةًmaAAthiratan
إِلَىٰila
رَبِّكُمْrabbikum
وَلَعَلَّهُمْwalaAAallahum
يَتَّقُونَyattaqoona
فَلَمَّانَسُواْمَاذُكِّرُواْبِهِۦٓأَنجَيۡنَاٱلَّذِينَيَنۡهَوۡنَعَنِٱلسُّوٓءِوَأَخَذۡنَاٱلَّذِينَظَلَمُواْبِعَذَابِۭبَـِٔيسِۭبِمَاكَانُواْيَفۡسُقُونَ١٦٥
Saheeh International

And when they [i.e., those advised] forgot that by which they had been reminded, We saved those who had forbidden evil and seized those who wronged, with a wretched punishment, because they were defiantly disobeying.

فَلَمَّاFalamma
نَسُوا۟nasoo
مَاma
ذُكِّرُوا۟thukkiroo
بِهِۦٓbihi
أَنجَيْنَاanjayna
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
يَنْهَوْنَyanhawna
عَنِAAani
ٱلسُّوٓءِalssooi
وَأَخَذْنَاwaakhathna
ٱلَّذِينَallatheena
ظَلَمُوا۟thalamoo
بِعَذَابٍۭbiAAathabin
بَـِٔيسٍۭbaeesin
بِمَاbima
كَانُوا۟kanoo
يَفْسُقُونَyafsuqoona
فَلَمَّاعَتَوۡاْعَنمَّانُهُواْعَنۡهُقُلۡنَالَهُمۡكُونُواْقِرَدَةًخَٰسِـِٔينَ١٦٦
Saheeh International

So when they were insolent about that which they had been forbidden, We said to them, "Be apes, despised."

فَلَمَّاFalamma
عَتَوْا۟AAataw
عَنAAan
مَّاma
نُهُوا۟nuhoo
عَنْهُAAanhu
قُلْنَاqulna
لَهُمْlahum
كُونُوا۟koonoo
قِرَدَةًqiradatan
خَـٰسِـِٔينَkhasieena
